3/13- Nostalgia and My Car Curse

Tuesday had the best weather since my coming to San Francisco. Before then, the days were steadily in the mid-50s with an unceasing wind. But that day, the high was 66 degrees and nothing above a caressing breeze was to be felt. Such weather just begs to be adventured in, don’t you think?

Ever since I found out I would be coming to San Francisco, visiting the house that was used for the exterior shots on the show “Full House” was on my list of to-dos. So, I decided that Tuesday would be the day it got checked off.

Anyone who watched the show can tell from my color photo that the house has been painted and that the red door is gone (true story: it was sold to another San Franciscan).

Despite the differences, it was still special to be able to dip my toes in some nostalgia for a few moments (and have the theme song stuck in my head the rest of the day).

A couple of blocks away from the “Full House” house was an adorable Vietnamese restaurant that I found myself eating at.

By nature, I operate with some sort of routine in place. It doesn’t necessarily have to be stuck to, but as long as something resembling a plan is present, I’m golden. While spontaneity isn’t my automatic response, it does give me a thrill. So, when my brain said “I know it wasn’t in the tentative plan, but let’s eat dinner here”, I responded with, “Self, you’re brilliant”.

My detour was rewarded with a delicious bowl of pho and glass of iced Vietnamese coffee.

I can’t tell you when or where I last had Vietnamese coffee, but I do know that I’ve had it before and that I’ve never had it like this.

The coffee, along with another glass filled with ice, was brought over and I watched as the cup filled with the smooth, delicious, dark nectar drip-style. A thin layer of sweetened condensed milk was already waiting to be mixed in, so once the coffee finished brewing, all I had to do was stir and pour the coffee in the glass of ice provided.

For a hot minute, I felt like a barista and it was spectacular.

Another moment of spontaneity hit me as I walked home. I was admiring the view of the ocean from afar when I saw what I discerned to be a pod of dolphins dotting the water. I was drawn in and swept away by the scene that opened up before me.

Bonfires were roaring along the beach, surfers were gliding across the wave crests, dolphin fins were breaking though the water, and the sky was the kind of spectacle that made me wish I could paint better than I can. All of it was so beautiful and I got to witness it all.

Along with a photo, I included a video I shot because I thought it captured the moment better than any of my stills did.

On Thursday, I scheduled my first appointment with a new CrossFit box!

If athletes have been doing CrossFit for a while, but transition to a new box, some box policies will require newcomers to “test out” of a list of movements to ensure they are be able to safely complete a WOD without a coach watching them 24/7.

Since it’s been a bit since my last WOD, I wanted to get some one-on-one training to refresh my memory on the different lifts and movements. That will be happening Monday evening!

In other health news, Friday, I had a consultation with a nutritionist! Having someone on the outside to encourage me and keep me accountable seems to be the best formula for consistent progress in my life. It’s what revolutionized my relationship with Jesus, it’s what drew me to CrossFit, so why not apply it to my personal nutrition and body goals as well?

I’m excited to stop wishing and actually start pursuing my health again! I not only miss the CrossFit community, but also feeling on top of what I’m doing to my body and watching it progress into something I can feel proud of!

Saturday was when my car curse reared its ugly head. A chunk of the day was spent in a Nissan dealership where an oil change turned into a $1,000 catch-up of the maintenance the dealership I bought the car from neglected to do at 30,000 miles.

While I was initially frustrated by the transition from a one hour job to a four hour one, I had to remind myself that this situation was precisely what my “car repairs” budget item was for. Due to having put that money aside, I was able to pay for the unexpected service expenses without it being a financial crisis.

Not ten minutes later, I found another reason to be grateful for budgeting for car repairs. I drove to Whole Foods to shop for my first week’s meal plans from my nutritionist and when parking, I forgot the Big Booty part of Big Booty Judy and tried to park her in a tight spot.

One of the parking garage pillars made sure I never forgot BBJ’s voluptuous figure again.

Oh, did I mention that I also found a $73 parking citation on BBJ’s windshield that morning?

It’s amazing that despite having never caused an accident and having never gotten a ticket, I have still had such bad luck with cars. Remember the craziness with my Jeep?

There’s a whole lot I have to be grateful for and it took a lot of deep breathing (and some laughing at myself) to not allow my frustration with my circumstances to overcome that fact.

It’s been a full week, to say the least.
