“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” – Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Suess
This is one of my FAQs I get when I tell people that I travel for my job, especially when I tell them I get to choose which facility I want to go to. Granted, my choices are limited to where jobs are posted, but I think I’ve seen at least one for every state, so that’s basically a free for all!
So, what is the answer? Honestly, I’m up for anywhere. I love traveling and experiencing the newness of change, so I won’t be picky as to where that takes me. No matter where I’ve been, I’ve always found people and places that pitch up their tents in my heart, so I hardly imagine that changing anytime soon.
However…if a girl was to dream…(aren’t I already dreaming now?!), I’d say out west.
The farthest west I’ve been is Nebraska and that was when I was ten-ish, traveling with my family to go to my dad’s cousin’s wedding. Wouldn’t really count that as “the western experience”.
As to specifically where in the west, I love the idea of seeing the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the hip city of Portland, the Pacific Ocean crashing on a California beach, the orange palette of Arizona or Nevada. Places that only calendars and my imagination have taken me to.
If I were to really dream, Alaska and Hawaii would be at the forefront. Both, in my mind, are dreamscapes molded into reality. To see massive grizzly bears fish for salmon or to scuba dive in the bluest blue ocean feels like something “other” people do, not little ol’ me. Would those magical places even allow a commoner like myself to enter into their other-worldly realms? (I’ve seen multiple job openings in both places, so I suppose there’s a chance!)
All in all, I’m eager to see where I will get to explore through this job. Whether to the mountains, the oceans, the rivers, or the landmark towns, wherever they call, I will go. Oh, how I will go.
Do you have any places that you have traveled to in the States and would recommend? Places that I would be a fool to miss out on? By golly, let me know!
