“What Do You Do?”

Anyone else have one of those jobs where when you’re asked THAT question, you groan inwardly because you know the long road of breaking down your job description lies before you? *raises both hands and a foot*

Don’t get me wrong, I love sharing about my job with others. I’ve known that it’s what I wanted “to do” since my freshman year of high school. To say I like my job is an understatement. However, seeing as how it’s a standard question in forming any sort of acquaintance, it’s a process that can be slightly…um…repetitive.

To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, here’s an example of how the conversation  usually goes:

“I’m a sonographer!”

“A stenographer?” (“a person whose job is to transcribe speech in shorthand.” Thanks, Google)

“No, a SO-nographer. It’s the official name for an *insert grimace* ultrasound technologist.”

“Oh! I (/my friend/mom/dog/potted plant) got an ultrasound on my _____ once!”

“Oh. Well, I just do ultrasounds on high-risk pregnancies.”

You get the idea. Then, there’s the travel aspect of the conversation, but I’ll spare you.

Essentially, I will be traveling to different facilities across the United States doing ultrasounds in perinatology/obstetric departments, typically in 13 week increments. My first assignment is with a hospital in Washington, DC (which I start Monday! Eeeek). Then, 13 weeks from now, who knows where I’ll be! Not me, but that’s the fun of it!

What would you guys like to hear about? What questions do you have? Please, lay it on me!
